MoE Desk Delivery Statement

TALKING POINTS BY PROF GEORGE MAGOHA, CABINET SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, JANUARY 20, 2021 AT OUR LADY OF FATIMA GIRLS’ SECONDARY SCHOOL

The Ministry is very impressed with the process of delivery of desks to primary and secondary schools under the Sh1.9 Billion Economic Stimulus Plan. I wish to particularly commend Nairobi County for achieving 100 per cent desk distribution. At the County, 14,490 desks have been supplied to primary schools at a cost of Sh36.2 million while 5,150 have been delivered to secondary schools at a cost of Sh19.75 Million.

The roll-out of the Government’s supply of desks is expected to

benefit public primary and secondary schools with a total of 625,000 desks.

Nationally, many counties have approached the 100 per cent mark and I urge them to step up the distribution as we seek to complete the exercise and focus on effective learning and preparation for examination. Some of the top performing counties in the desk distribution with over 80% are:

I wish to inform the country that the process of school reopening has settled in well with 99 per cent of learners reporting back to school. The Inter-Agency Stakeholders Group is working hard to trace the remaining leaners to ensure they are enrolled back to school.

Following the directive by H.E. the President to the Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government in his Address to the Nation during the 57th Jamhuri Day Celebrations, ALL Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs are mopping up all children who have not returned to school including pregnant girls.

Despite the challenge of physical/social distancing in some schools, they are implementing different mitigation strategies including use of dining halls, auditoriums and open spaces (learning under trees) among others.

The Government applauds parents and well wishers for ensuring that ALL learners returned to school masked. In the few areas which experienced challenges, the Government in collaboration with partners such as the KCB Group Foundation and UNICEF distributed masks to learners from low socio-economic and vulnerable backgrounds.

From our assessment, ALL learning institutions are using thermal guns to monitor the body temperatures of learners as part of adherence to Ministry of Health COVID-19 protocols.

Additionally, ALL learning institutions have installed hand-washing points, in form of water taps, water tanks and water containers at common entry points. The Government applauds Members of Parliament who through NG-CDF allocations alongside the Ministry of Water and Sanitation for their efforts in supporting schools with water storage facilities and access to water.

As we assured the country, the Government has already released Sh4,620,813.565 to ALL Public Primary Schools and Sh14,910,271,968 to ALL Public Secondary Schools. Headteachers and School Principals should utilize this money prudently to safeguard and enhance learning.
